In our earlier article posted on the 3rd August we commented on reports that Tiger Woods estranged wife Elin Nordegren would receive $750 million (£500 million) on her divorce from the golfer.
The divorce has now been finalised in Florida by Bay County Court Circuit Judge Judy Pittman Biebel in what has been described as a brief hearing at which both parties were present.
Speculation continues over the size of Miss Nordegren’s settlement but reports in the US media suggest that it may be substantially less than the $750 million originally reported and that Miss Nordegren will receive over $100 million (£64 .4 million). Apparently, Miss Nordegren has agreed to the lower figure in order to avoid a messy court battle.
Certainly, when considering whether to accept a settlement rather than pursue a court application a party should always weigh up the potential extra sum they may hope to receive against the risk of litigation and the impact of court proceedings on the future relationship between the parties particularly where there are children. Tiger and Elin appear to putting the children first as the arrangements for the children were at the heart of the discussions and friends report that the couple are back on speaking terms as they wish to raise their children together.
The couple had signed a pre-nuptial agreement but this was renegotiated as Woods tried to save the marriage.
