The Stress Of Marriage Breakdown

Dragons’ Den star Duncan Bannatyne has denied newspaper reports that he was suicidal after a recently entry on Twitter. It has been reported that this was the result of difficulties in his marriage which he and his wife Joanne are attempting to work through.  Counselling is often helpful in these situations.

Whilst there is no suggestion of a pending divorce for Mr Bannatyne, it is well known that divorce or relationship breakdown is one of the most stressful life events. People may be reluctant to seek advice either because of cost or because they are uncomfortable with the idea of counselling. However, there are very good reasons why professional help should be sought in these situations.

If there are children to be cared for, the parent who has care of the children needs to make sure that they themselves are well both emotionally and physically so that they can care for the children. This is just like the advice when flying to fit your own oxygen mask before that of any child.

The individual who is suffering from the stress of marriage breakdown is less likely to be able to make considered decisions about arrangements for the children or finances which could lead to protracted negotiations or court proceedings and thus increased costs. Stress can also affect an individual’s performance at work which could have implications for an employee’s record or the ability of a business owner to run his or her business.

Therefore, whenever a relationship breaks down it can be hugely beneficial for the individual to seek help. It is reported that Mr Bannatyne is being supported by his children. Friends and family members can of course be an invaluable support at such times but are unlikely to have the professional skills that may be needed in some cases.

Here in the family department at Myers Lister Price we always consider the wider picture and have a network of professionals who we can refer clients to including counsellors.
