Appointing Guardians for your Children
Unfortunately it’s a fact of life that you may have to make provisions in a Will for someone to become a Guardian for your children. This is not something any parent would like to consider, but if you are a parent, and your children are under the age of eighteen, you should prepare for it.
What is a Guardian?
- An individual who is solely in charge of your child / children in the event of your death.
Who can be a Guardian?
- Any adult that you choose fit to look after your child / children.
- They can be a close family member or a friend, someone who your children have a bond with.
What is the Guardians role?
- They have the same responsibility that you have as their parent, looking after their care, health and well being
- Feeding, clothing, educating them, as well as moral guidance
Appointing a Guardian
- It is recommended that you inform the person/s who you wish to name as Guardian before you include them in your Will
- Make sure you have thought this through and that all parties are happy
- Myers Lister Price Solicitors can help you with drafting your Will ensuring that your reasons for appointing the Guardians you have named are justified within your Will
